Η άχρηστη πληροφορία της ημέρας: Το ιρλανδικό baby boom σημειώθηκε το 1980, ακριβώς εννιά μήνες μετά την επίσκεψη του Πάπα Ιωάννη Παύλου του Β' στην Ιρλανδία.


"1979 was a huge event in Irish history, because it was the year of the Pope's visit. Οne of three of us turned up to see the Pope, and this should have been the high point of Hibernian Catholic Ireland. Instead, it probably served to underline just how thin the facade actually was. The Church and Hibernian Ireland had peaked.

It peaked on the third weekend of June of 1980, nine months to very day after the Pope kissed the tarmac."

Ο McWilliams λοιπόν, δηλωμένος θαυμαστής του Milton Friedman, υποστήριζε χαρούμενα ότι αυτή η γενιά των Ιρλανδών, η πρώτη που μεγαλώνει σε συνθήκες Ευημερίας! Φτηνού χρήματος! Αύξησης βιοτικού επιπέδου! Ελεύθερης αγοράς! Αχαλίνωτου καταναλωτισμού! Ένταξης στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση! Ευρώ, ρε!, αυτή η γενιά είναι το Mέλλον. Η γενιά που θα πάει τη χώρα μπροστά, πιο μπροστά, ακόμα πιο μπροστά, ενώ η οικονομία πάει γαμιώντας, τα λεφτά τρέχουν απ' τα μπατζάκια και ο κελτικός τίγρης βρυχάται. Yippie-ki-yay, motherfucker!
